Starting the game:
If the game does not "autorun" upon inserting the CD, then open the CD folder and double click the icon named "XXV-TheDisplacement".

The game will launch, cue the ominous rumblings and oppressive cello!
The in-game screen is the main menu page. You can either:
Start a new game: begins a new game with introductory sequence.
Continue previous chapter: Select if you wish you continue from where you left off.
Quit: Leave the game.
Note: There is no specific "save game" function in The Displacement, interactive realms are split into logical chapters. Completing one chapter will lead you to the next. When returning to your game, click "continue previous chapter" to select the "realm" you were situated in last.
Ok, onto the actual walkthrough….
Upon clicking "start new game" you will find a postcard hidden within the pages of a dusty old book. What is the postcard of? Well, it says quite clearly it is The Church of St.Mary, in the village of Lynch Fox Wood, 1924. A small parish church illustrates the postcard.
Click the postcard to read the back…
Strange. The postcard appears to be written by someone in 1924, who knows you are reading it in the 1990's! They talk of being trapped in 1924, and wish to return to their own time of 1999. An address is given, Fassett Square, along with a request to travel there…
Click the small arrow situated in the bottom corner of the book…
You journey begins. As you travel to Fassett Square, in London, you keep a track of your movements and explain how you came by the strangely blank book and the mysterious postcard. What is the connection with the solar eclipse of this year?
Click the arrow again…
You continue to write your journal.
Arriving at Fassett Square, you knock on the door. No answer. The door is open! Slipping inside, you realise that your adventure is about to begin.
Chapter One / The Hallway / Time is 5pm

The air seems stale, and no noise can be heard from the outside world behind you. Time feels frozen. What can possibly have brought about such a thing?
What to see:
- Click the brass door handle in front of you. Locked!
- Click the large picture on the wall, type faces and fonts?
- Look left at the photo of the paving
- Look right round to see the door behind you, click it.
- Look up from the door to see the stained glass window, with "25"
Step forward to the foot of the stairs.
- Turn left to look at a second wooden door.
- Click the candle, and look at the creepy icons on the wall.
- Turn around again, and look back down the hall.
- Click the light switch. All goes dark. Switch it back on!
From the foot of the stairs, click to look up the stairs. Further doors await you. Proceed upwards. Pictures and photographs decorate the wall to your right. Further up you find other doors. All locked! Blast!
- Look at the fox skull. Urgh.
- Flip the light switch at the top of the stairs, by the two pinkish doors. Dark. Switch it back on!
From the foot of the stairs, click towards the door at the end of the hall. It's locked, but turn right. A second door is situated under the stairs. A cellar perhaps? Unlock the catch, and open the door! It's dark down there. Flip the light switch to the right of the view. Ah ha!
Proceed down into the depths of the cellar…
Exploring this area you should see:
- Plenty of light bulbs, that is handy to know in case of an emergency.
- Paint, paint and more paint! Hmm, those small bottles look like photographic chemicals too! Is there are darkroom somewhere?
- Click the wall. An unseen hand writes in chalk on the wall. "You look for stars when darkness falls… ". That's obvious, isn't it?
Proceed further into the cellar. That looks like the electricity function box. Click the switch. Darkness again, but what's that noise? A distant rumble and a distorted voice? What did it say? It sounded a little like "Go Away". Shall we? Nah! Time to find those stars I think. Return to the foot of the stairs….
"Look for stars when darkness falls…." the message told you. There is a "star" shaped mirror at the foot of the stairs! Flip the light switch next to it, and plunge the hall into darkness. Click the now darkened mirror.
Hmm, the zodiac, the movement of the sun, and a star chart….
Click the constellations to expose them. When the sequence is complete a loud "ping" is heard, and the sound of a door unlocking! How exciting. Which room is next…?
Check the doors, but it is the door by the front entrance that is now a jar. Click to enter.
Recapitulation: There is something in the house with you, possibly evil. The doors are all locked, typical! Someone is trying to communicate with you… perhaps this "J.M.I.Boakes" who hid the postcard you found.
Chapter Two / The Livingroom / Time is frozen at 11:18am

The air is even staler in this room. There is a clock on the mantelpiece, but no sound can be heard from its mechanism. Light pours in from the street outside, but no people can be heard…
Things to see and do:
- Look right, at the curtains across the room. They won't open.
- Look at the picture on the wall, almost out of view. A child sleeps among the pebbles on a beach. Surreal.
- Look at the phone. Pick it up. It works! Try a few numbers by entering them and then clicking the green button. Hmm, call the police! Dial 999. It's engaged, typical! Perhaps you need another number?
- Look at the book on the sofa. Hmm, Roald Dahl. Tales of the Unexpected? You can say that again! A note from Jonathan. What do those letters mean? "Enter this ******** into the *****". The letters are fragments of the alphabet. The phone has letters on it too. Give it a go. "GHI" is number 4. "DEF" is number 3. "WXYZ" is number 9. Press the green button. A very odd message follows. "Password letter equals "T for Tommy". Hurrah! Our first password letter.
- Look at the mantelpiece. A small bear, a scarab beetle, and the clock reveals the time is 11:18am, permanently.
- Also, the stone head. Move the mouse to reveal a sequence of numbers. The clue to the book puzzle perhaps?
- Look at the TV. It's dead. Click the door beneath and open it. Take the TV remote control. Close the door, and look at the TV again. The remote is in your hand. Click the "green" button to switch the TV on. Just static. Try the first few channels. The TV is frozen as well. Each channel is showing what was on at 11:18am. Spooky. There is no password letter though! Perhaps there is another channel. A clue awaits you in the room somewhere.
- You can click on the green chair, and look across the room from your sitting position. The pictures on the wall can be viewed from here. A gun! I hope you don't need to use it! Before sitting in the chair, there is a magazine box to one side. What's that inside? A TV Listings magazine, and a "post it" note. Excellent. This could be our clue for the TV. Channel 079.
- By the fireplace, you can look at another gun. It's ok, this one is fake! Also, there is a planetary model. Hmm, this is another reference to astrology….
- Follow the TV sequence above to switch on the TV, and enter the number found on the "post it" note in the magazine box. 079. Brilliant! Password letter equals "A".
- Books on the table. The one to the left hides a letter underneath. Open it. Ah ha! It is from an estate Agent (realty agent). It reveals who bought this house. Click the two grey arrows, on the right, to see the second page. A map! Well, a plan of the house at least. How useful! There is a message from the mysterious "Jonathan". He knows you are here. You will take the map with you. Also, it tells you that you need eight "password" letters. There are two in this room alone. Where are they though?
- Look at the other book. Nuttall's Standard Dictionary. Open it. An unseen hand, possibly Jonathan's, is writing to you from beyond… So, your enemy is a "time distortion", and the rooms are all frozen. What caused this to happen? He was running a simulation on his PC, but of what? The words are scribbled out. Blast! Move onto the next page. The time distortion is "fabricating a barrier". Solving the puzzle will release you. Do you know how to solve the puzzle, if so, click "commence". If not, click "abandon" and search for your clue. Jonathan mentioned something about a mask. When you have the sequence, click "commence" to tackle this conundrum. "X's" and "V's" illustrate the page. Click them in the sequence given to you by the stone mask. Sequence shown below. Once accomplished, you will hear that very satisfying "ping". Another room has opened! Go back to the red curtains, and open them. Leave the livingroom, and continue your adventure.

Recapitulation: So, a "time distortion" is causing all the trouble. It knows you are here, and is working against you. Your host "Jonathan" lived and worked in this house. An experiment, or simulation, has brought about the time freeze. A password is needed to access his computer. Two letters of that password were found in this room, "A" and "T". We'll need more than that to solve this mystery. What is "The Shadow Dimension"?
Chapter Three / The Diningroom / Time is frozen at 3pm

Wow. Time has just jumped nearly four hours! You are now standing in the diningroom of 25 Fassett Square. Sunlight is pouring in from the garden beyond. Perhaps you can escape into the greenery later on. Here's hoping!
Anyway, time to investigate this new room….
Things to see and do:
- Look at the portrait, glass blocks and gyroscope.
- There's also a candlestick on the floor, with black candles.
- Open the drawer of the cupboard. It's full of CD's. Take one.
- Look right, there is a wooden door.
- Look left, and you can look out of the window, across the table.
- There is a blue cupboard in the corner, with a plant and candle on it, between the two there is a "pin art" contraption. Someone's handprint is still preserved.
- Look left again, there is another blue cupboard and a stereo system. Try and open the cupboard. Locked. Insert the CD into the stereo by clicking it, and then pick up the remote control on the cupboard. Press play. Music begins to play, and something unlocked. The cupboard is now open.
- Open the cupboard. It is full of videotapes. Pick up the green toy.
- Blob Monster! It's a handheld game. Click the "on/off" button. Watch the start-up and then click "GO". Play each of the levels (three in all). The way to win is to simply click the monsters. Easy stuff! Hmm, upon winning you hear another door unlock. Excellent. Lastly, the little game asks you if you want to know a secret…. password letter equals "L".
Click out of the cupboard. And turn twice to the right. The door is open, and you can see the hallway beyond. Hmm, I wonder which door has opened…. let's go see.
Try all the doors, one of them must open. Maybe upstairs. Look at the map, it is The Study you want.
Recapitulation: You have another password letter, "L".
Chapter Four / The Study / Time is frozen at 12:05pm

Hmm. Backwards in time on this occasion, it's noon. This looks like a large room, with plenty to look at and investigate. According to the map, there are two password letters in this room. So, without further ado…
Things to see and do:
- From your current position, look at the books on the shelf to the left. Also, the book on the table next to the chair, and the one on the foot stool. Hmm, "Alice Through the Looking Glass", how appropriate.
- Look out the window. Beyond the bright chrysanthemums there is a car parked outside.
- Turn right, there is a cute blue cupboard and a piano. Click the top of the cupboard.
- Open the cupboard door, and look at the books. Nothing much there.
- Look at the chessboard. Weird! It has come to life. Click the "tick", it activates the sequence. Hmm, what to do? Watch the sequence in which the flags appear and then click the flags in the same order. Hey presto! (Pen and paper might be useful, or see below!)

- Ah ha! Password letter equals "A".
- Leave the chessboard, and take a look at the piano. Play it. Hmm, maybe you need a tune to copy. Leave the piano.
- Look right, there is a computer on the desk! It must have some answers, but first look at the book on the table, and the shelves beyond.
- Open the metal filing cabinet. Look at the business card. Close the drawer and look around the room. A phone rings… find it. It is on the desk….
A distorted voice is trying to communicate with you, from where?
- Time for the PC! Click on it to get a closer view. There is a round switch on the hard drive, click it. The machine begins to "boot up".
- Hmm, the internal clock was reset at "12:05". That's the current time!
- There is a "shortcut" to a program on the desktop. Music Maker. Let's give that a go.
- Click the play button. A tune! Perhaps you could play it on the piano?
Back to the piano:
After listening to the music sample carefully, try and repeat it on the piano. There are 8 notes, 2 of which are played twice. Still stuck? Take a look at this:
Play the notes correctly, and an unseen hand will write the words "Password Letter Equals "E". That's great, we have both password letters. Now to get out of this room. Back to the computer on the desk.
Is this the PC that we need the password for? Only one way to find out, start hunting through the files. Lets start by looking at some recently visited websites…
- Click the "Internet" button.
- "You've got Post!" Read them by clicking the email addresses on the left-hand side.
- Click "favourites" on the program menu bar. Then select "codebreakers".
- Hmm, interesting site. Click "guestbook" to read what the visitors have to say.
- One of the messages is from "Jonathan". Problems with the PC again. So, it can't be this machine. There must be another somewhere in the house. Perhaps we should see if we can crack that code he has submitted. Perhaps the numbers stand for letters, so 1 would be "A" and so on. The coded message reads "BE CAREFUL, U R IN DANGER". Oops. Too late now.
- Click on "favourites" again. Then select "webcams". This could be interesting!
- Click current location. Wow, it's this house! How handy. Look through all the cameras to see if you can spot any clues, looking at "The Kitchen"" last. Ah ha! There's that satifying "ping" again. That means a door has unlocked somewhere. Could it be the kitchen?
Make your way to the study door, near where you entered this room, and leave the room. Down the stairs, to the kitchen. See map for location. Click the door knob…
Recapitulation: People are beginning to worry about Jonathan, recent emails express concern. His PC is somewhere else in the house, a room we have yet to enter. The machine itself has been behaving strangely, and showing coded messages… is it or was it trying to warn him about something. The solar eclipse is mentioned again. Could it have triggered this "time distortion".
Chapter Five / The Kitchen / Time is frozen at 1:59pm

We are getting closer to the garden, that can only be a good thing? Right?
According to the map, there is one password letter in here somewhere.
Things to see and do:
- Look at the cheese on the table, the candle stick and painted eggs on the window.
- Take a glance at the sake bottles on the shelf above the sink.
- Turn left, there is a door out to the garden. Guess what, it's locked. Find the key!
- Look to the right of the kitchen. The clock says it is 1:59pm.
- Next to the sink, there is a bottle of cheap fizzy. Yuck. Click the neck of the bottle.
- Beyond there is another door. It's tiny. There is a sign on the front: "vehicle"? Maybe a joke.
- Look at the shelves, with all the bottles. There are some cute little tins, made to look like Victorian shop fronts, click on "J Smith & Sons". Hmm, that sound means we have found a password letter. Look at the writing on the shop window. Password letter equals "T".
Now it is time to get out into the garden.
- Look at the oven, you can turn the gas on and open the door. Nothing much here though.
- Look at the coffee making gear on the kitchen top.
- Open the top of the coffee machine. Pour the water in. Take out the coffee scoop. Open the coffee container, some powdered coffee will appear in the scoop. Click the scoop to place it back in the machine. Place the cup underneath by clicking on it. Finally, press the button on top of the machine. Ah ha! One hot cup of caffeine goodness! Place it back on the saucer, and take a closer look. Click the spoon…
- The spoon transforms into a key! Yes! Take the key ("ping"!), and go to the garden door.
- Look closer at the door knob, and click the key. It appears in the lock. Click it to unlock the door… and out into the garden we go!
Recapitulation: Another password letter! This time it was "T".
Chapter Six / The Garden / Time is frozen at midday

It's good to be outside. The rooftops of London are visible over the tops of the tress and shrubs of the garden. The air is warm, and the occasional flying insect buzzes past…
Things to see and do:
- Look left, there is a pond. Its surface is covered in tiny green leaves.
- Turn left again, and you can look back into the diningroom.
- Final turn, now you can look back through the kitchen door.
- Progress further into the garden…
- A hosta grows among the shrubs
- Turn right and look through the kitchen window
- Look at the bird table to the left, a bird sings out
- What's that hidden on the wall, another creepy icon
- Look at the bird table. That bird sings again. Click the wooden surface. What's this? A pattern? Is it a sequence? Maybe you should note it down.
- Continue along the path.
- What's that in the plants? A statue? Click it? It's a Chinese figurine.
- Can't go any further, maybe you are missing something. Click the tomato plant right in front of you. Hmm, what's that on the fruit? Ah ha! Password letter equals "R". Well, that was easy!
- Return to the path, and then click on the wooden pond. There is a frog among the flora, as well as a lantern, another figurine and scary Chinese mask.
- Return to the path, and continue into the garden…
- An annoying bee finds your ear fascinating, brush it away.
- Look at the shed. It has a padlock.
- Look at the Hydrangea to the left of the shed. No key there.
- Proceed towards the back of the garden. Taking a quick look at the azalea on the way.
- Move under the arbour, into the sitting area. There is a lantern on the wall.
- To the right there is a champagne bottle, it hints at happy times. Look through the shed window. Is that a dark room in there? Cool. We just need to get in.
- Turn left and look back down the garden towards the house. You can move back over to the path, and maybe try opening the back door.
- Finally, return to the arbour. Look at the marble table, and three wooden chairs. What's that on the table? Another champagne bottle (someone has been having a right royal time in this garden), and some marble pyramids. How strange, they "click" when you touch them. Maybe they are not what they seem. Do you have a combination? If not, go back to the bird table, and note the sequence. Otherwise, try this:
1, 3, 1, 1, 3, 2
"Ping!" That means we can leave this area. The small pyramid has turned into a key! Take it. A small key. Maybe it fits the padlock on the shed.
Go back to the shed. Click on the padlock for a close up and then click your small key. The darkroom door is open. Enter, it’s time for some photography!
The Darkroom/Shed:
- Make a mental note where the red wall light is.
- Click left, and pull the blind down. It's dark now.
- Press the red light to switch it on. There, that's better.
- Click the base of the photographic enlarger. To the left there is the control switch, press the round button to set the timer, and then click the black button. The enlrager will "expose" your print.
- Look at the plastic trays, and pour the two chemicals into each one in turn. (Click the bottle and then click the tray).
- Place your blank photo in the "dev" tray, an image will appear. Then place it in the "fix" tray. What's the image, looks like a country lane. Should be pleasant enough, but what is that ominous rumble? Look closer at the photo… (click it).
What was that flash? All goes black…..
….slowly, you begin to wake. Something is wrong. You are IN the photograph. Impossible. It was black and white. What's happening!? And what is that whispering! Continue along the lane…
Is this "The Shadow Dimension" that Jonathan mentioned in his notes to you?
A crack of thunder rumbles overhead. This isn't looking promising.
Further along the lane there is a singe traffic light. How surreal. You can't go any further, but maybe that is because the light is red. Wait until it is green, and click towards the gate to the right. A noisy car passes by…. The sun is setting. Night-time soon. Climb over the wooden stile, and into the field. That storm is rolling in. We had better be quick. Move forward again. A flash of lightning. Turn right, and proceed through the woods…
Startling some birds on the way through, you find a path at the other side of the woods. Are those gravestones? Move forward. Yes, it is a churchyard! The church is ruined and ominous. Does it look familiar? It is the church from the postcard you found in the book. Speaking of which, what's that on the ground to the right? The same postcard. Look towards the back of the churchyard, by clicking on the gravestones. Two headstones for you to look at.
Morwenna Platt
1851 - 1923
Can beginnings or endings ever be
more valuable than the time spent uniting them.
Edith Hudson
Died 1948
Aged 67
There was a third headstone nearer the path. Go back and look at that. What's this? Another code? Perhaps there is a clue to cracking this elsewhere. Continue up the path towards the church. Pass through the decorative doorway, to the base of the tower. Sheltering doves call out to you. Click the door to the right. Locked!
Move into the ruined nave of the church. There is a doorway in the wall, move over there. Click the opening. What a strange noise. What's that on the floor? A note, from "JB".
A = C
Z = B
Hmm, perhaps this can help us with the coded gravestone. Return to it, and give it a go.
Other than that, click beyond the nave and proceed further into the graveyard. An urn sits proudly on top of a column. Look left, there are four more gravestones. Each one has a name and two dates on them. This is how long these people lived. The symbols underneath are interactive, you can activate one of each. Hmm, maybe this is some sort of combination.
Click on the first grave, and select the first symbol of the four. Then look at the urn again. That symbol has appeared on the column!
Looking at the dates you can work out who lived the longest and shortest. So, select the symbol that puts each grave in order. The longest life will be first, the shortest life will be last.
George Crabtree 1887 to 1962: 75 years
Rachel Grey 1953 to 1996: 43 years
Peter Crowhurst 1926 to 1998: 72 years
Thomas Platt 1890 to 1954: 64 years
So, the order would be: George, Peter, Thomas and Rachel.
Enter that onto the graves, and return to the urn. All four symbols have appeared! Click them again, in the right order.

That storm has finally broken. The graveyard looks very sinister. Time to leave I think!
Back track to the tower, and try the wooden door again. The rain has started to pour from the sky. The door opens. The passage beyond is pitch black… a leap of faith is called for….
Chapter Seven / The Garden / Time is not frozen

Darkness again. Slowly your eyes adjust to the gloom. You are still in the darkroom, perhaps you never left. Things feel different than before… more real. Time isn't frozen anymore. The house has returned to normal. Let's get out of here!
- A nearby dog barks out over the nocturnal rooftops of London.
- Turn around, and open the door, it is somewhere in front of you.
- It's night-time! A flood light is beaming right into your eyes.
- Take a look at the pond, it looks murky.
- The back room is lit, but the door is locked. Is that a train passing by beyond the garden?
- Go back down the path you came through in daytime. The house looks so different at night. All the lights appear to be on.
- Someone must have lit these candles, click to look at them.
- Look up, when on the path. A light comes on upstairs! Does that mean that someone is home? Have you fixed the "time distortion"?
- Look through the kitchen window.
- Move towards the window, and kitchen door.
- Turn left, and pass through into the kitchen.
- Someone has left a book on the counter. The eclipse again!
- Turn right, and move into the hallway.
- More lit candles. Something very strange is going on.
- Turning right, you can hammer on the door. No reply. So…
- Turn left instead and move up the stairs…
Chapter Eight / The Bathroom / Time is frozen at 11:58pm

Blast! Time has frozen again. We are trapped inside the house once more, but at least it is a new room. Perhaps we are getting closer to finding Jonathan's PC, and solving this mystery for good. So far we have 7 of the password letters needed. According to the map, the last one is in this room somewhere….
Things to see and do:
- Look at the mirror, to see someone trapped beyond its surface. Could this be "Jonathan"?
- Look at the book by the loo, Mary Queen of Scots. She lost her head, poor thing.
- There is a wooden toy on the mantelpiece
- Look at the icon, and candle on the wall. Who is lighting these candles!
- A gargoyle guards the strangest of places, the toilet itself!
- Hmm, standing at the back of the bathroom, and looking out the open door you'll notice that there is something to look at on the floor. What is it?
- Touching the floor tile reveals another conundrum. Looks like anagrams.
- Click the moving letters to see your first challenge. Any ideas? Type in your suggestions. If it is correct, you will move onto the next anagram. The words are:
Calculated
Anagrams
Hopefully
Confusing
Persons
Unknown
- Ah ha! Password letter equals "N". That's the final password letter. Yes! Time to find that computer. Leave the bathroom through the open door. At the top of the stairs light pours out from an open doorway, I think it's time to solve this mystery once and for all.
Final Chapter / The Computer Room / Time Unknown

Looks like we've found the other computer. It's on too! This room looks like it is waiting for something to happen, so perhaps we should get on with it….
- Look at the desk. There is a clock, stapler and glass full of beer. Someone has been here recently. Hmm, clicking that postcard of the Mona Lisa has a surprising effect. Is that a voice? What's it saying?
- Look at the whiteboard on the wall. There is nothing on it. Except a small business card in the corner. Hmm, Jonathan's contact details. If only it were that simple. Hmm, touching it makes a noise. A voice? It's very distorted though.
- Look to the right, there are papers and books on the trunk. Touch the dictionary. Is that a voice again? A voice from beyond…. "ever be more valuable…"? Or something like that?
- Look at the computer's hard drive, it is definitely on, but there is nothing on the screen.
- Look at the candle, click it. You can hear the voice again. Different words though.
- Pick up the "solar glasses" from in front of the computer. Look back at the whiteboard and click the glasses. Ah ha! Oh. It's another code. Time to get to work on this one! It is similar to the one we solved earlier, on the other computer.
If A = 1 and Z = 26, the answer to this code is:
Can beginnings or endings ever be
more valuable than the time spent uniting them.
JONATHAN
P.s. U R nearly there
Well, that's good to know!
We've heard that phrase before, back in the churchyard. It was on Morwenna Platt's gravestone. Perhaps it has more significance. The voices in this room, although distorted, sound as if they are trying to say that phrase. Let's help it complete it.
- Click the four vocal sources in order to complete the above sentence.
- First, the Mona Lisa. "Can beginnings or endings…"
- Second, the dictionary. "Ever be more valuable…"
- Third, the candle. "Than the time…"
- Fourth, the business card. "Spent uniting them…"
You can now access the computer! Hurrah! Oh. It needs the password. Well, we have all eight letters, what can is possibly spell?
The letters, in order of finding them were:
T A L A E T R N
Hmm, I have a feeling that isn't the password. Maybe it's another anagram. Password and end game listed below.

Trying to put things right, the computer advises you to switch off the hard drive manually. Click out of this view, and press the blue button on the hard drive tower. What was that noise? Return to the monitor. It is still on. The computer begins to panic. Something, or someone, is attempting to overwrite the existing operating system. Is it a hacker? Or something more sinister?
System Failure in 5 seconds…..
End sequence follows.
