Tawny
Mill & Restaurant rests in the gently sloping hills of South
East Cornwall. The gallery was opened in 1998, to provide an alternative
art space for the county's artists. Formally the Apple Press and Mill,
the gallery offers a rustic, unusual space for photography, fine art and
installation. As well as static shows, the gallery has also played host
to drama, musical events and interactive media presented on LCD screens.
The darkened, brick passages that form the exhibition space are a pleasure
to wander, and offer plenty of time for contemplation and reflection.
Artists, from across Cornwall, have enjoyed great success at the Tawny
Mill.
The restaurant, opened in 2001, offers many dishes from organic local/specialist
sausages to sushi crafted with the finest Nori and locally caught fish.
Classic cuisine is on offer alongside fusion dishes such as tempura, Katsu,
Curries and Soya based marvels.
Also of interest is the Tawny Mill Smokery. Freshly landed mackerel, Plaice
and Cod are favourites. Tawny Mill Smokery is a thoroughly traditional
smokery, where the brick kilns are hand-fired using only the finest oak
dust and chips.Time
– lots of it – is a key factor in the quality of what we produce
– whether in the curing of our salmon or in the slow 2-day smoke
of our Duloe Hams and rare-breed bacon. In our opinion, the quality of
what we do is worth far more than the pace at which we produce. That's
not to say you'll find us sitting idle – we always work to the maximum
volume possible without compromising the recipes that gave this smokery
its reputation.
